Roma Pride, the demonstration for the defense of LGBT rights, is back. Thousands of people are parading in the center of the capital for the parade which has just begun in Piazza della Repubblica.

This year the godmother is the singer Elodie.
The slogan chosen for the 2022 edition of the parade is “let’s make noise” in homage to Raffaella Carrà, an LGBT icon who passed away on 5 July 2021.

The event is also celebrated in other Italian and international cities, from Genoa to Tel Avivin Israel, up to Kathmandu and al Disneyland Paris.

In Rome, in Piazza dell’Esquilino, vases painted with the colors of the rainbow were installed, “to say that Rome is a welcoming, open, inclusive and supportive city, to say that every place is the right place to feel at homethe squares, the streets, the parks, the whole city ”, explained the Councilor for Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle of the capital, Sabrina Alfonsi.

“Where the Pride marches, peace breaks out”, wrote the leader of + Europe Emma Bonino on social media this morning. “Pride, born as a revolt against discrimination suffered by the LGBTI + community, is today a reliable thermometer to understand the degree of health of a democracy: where citizens, all citizens, live better in their freedom. Where they are prohibited, censored or brutally repressed, all freedoms are lacking ”.
“For this reason today, after two difficult years – continues Bonino addressing the LGBT community – dance, sing, shout, claim full equality, you have every right to it. Let’s hold on to freedom, let’s hold on to the Europe that protects it, let’s hold on to Pride. I am still a bit bruised after a fall but – he concludes – with my heart I will parade with all of you ”.
However, there is no lack of actions against Pride.
The Catholic political movement Militia Christi and the national movement of the Patriots Network posted posters at dawn along the path of the march in opposition to what they call a “sad event”.

“With this initiative, which reports the timeless words of Pope St. John Paul II on the essence of this unfortunate question – they explain – we intend to brand the institutions as irresponsible, from the Municipality of Rome to the Lazio Region, for having granted spaces and patronage to events intolerant ideologies, which vulgarly mock the religion and faith of billions of people ”.
