The ecological and environmental emergency in Catania he never stops talking and here is a new dilemma that began a few months ago. In the final months of last year in fact they have been 110 paulonias planted distributed as follows in different areas of the city: 80 at the Gemmellaro Parknear via Palermo and corso Indipendenza, 21 on the roundabout in front of the San Marco di Librino hospital and 9 in via Pugliathe road that runs north along piazza I Vicerè in the Canalicchio district.
These tree specimens were sold for the modest sum of 6 euros each by a non-profit organization in Piedmont to Plastic Free Catania, which donated them to the Municipality. The latter, through the Multiservizi. he started hole digging activities to be able to plant them, but afterwards no maintenance was done and this led to more than half of them dying. Even before that there was also the request by the Municipality to Plastic Free to pay out 100 euros to buy the fertilizer. To run for cover and to supply water resources to those already existing, the boys of the Eris Formazione committed themselves as regards those of the San Marco hospital roundabout, the family of a girl for those of the Gemmellaro Park and the residents of the part low of Canalicchio for those of via Puglia.
The responses from the municipality have always been unconvincing, as the architect Marina Galeazzimanager of the Office for the Protection and Management of Public Green in the Municipality of Catania, has always said that there is no money and means for maintenance after being solicited by the group leader of the 5 Star Movement of the city council, Graziano Bonaccorsi. A further setback to the city, which is already having to face problems of no small importance especially regarding the disposal of waste. It should also be remembered that paulownia is an arboreal species that absorbs carbon dioxide and would bring many benefits to our breathing of the air. The contact person for Plastic Free Catania, Rosângela Archdeaconheard by us by telephone, told the details of this story, underlining the total absence of the Municipality and the offices in charge and the efforts made to be able to save what can be saved.
“I decided to buy for 6 euros each – said the Archdeacon – these paulonias, but the Municipality continues to say that it has nothing to maintain them and above all, neither from the office of the architect Galeazzi at the Villa Bellini nor from that of the councilor for Ecology, Andrea Barresi, answers come. At the time of their arrival they also told us that we had to take care of them. Multiservizi also did an extraordinary job of watering these paulonias with a tankerbut unfortunately it is also true that he carries out a job established by the contract he has with the Municipality. After this I have decided that I will do nothing more with this municipal administration. I conclude by saying that it is absurd not to be able to get on a par with other Italian cities for the maintenance of greenery “.
